Springtime Love PatternsTrends and Fashions:
Spring is technically here now (just tell that to the frozen folks up north) and spring
fashions are on the shelves in full force. Many of them can actually be called "pretty" - which is a switch from the somewhat drab colors that have been around the past year. I actually put off buying clothes
last fall, just because I didn't care for much of what was "fashionable." But spring fasions are somewhat irresistable. According to Marabella Magazine the trends indicate that: "Color is back, in
the prettiest of hues - including every possible pink. Ornamentation is in high supply, with decorations appearing in a wide range of textures and touches, from butterflies to beads to irridescence." Florals,
pleated skirts, white blouses, silk, chiffon, taffeta, suede, light weight fabrics in pinks, purples and blues are in supply. As far as knitwear fashions: chenille dresses, thinly striped sweaters, cashmeres with
beading and embroidery - with dragonflies decorating some sweaters - all appeared in the London spring fashion line-up. Julien MacDonald is becoming established as the king of British knitwear and will probably set

Spring
is such a wonderful time, full of love and warmth. And, as those who read my last edition know, love's been especially on my mind lately as I was just recently married, and on Valentine's day at that! So here are a couple of patterns that reflect the spirit of springtime love:

Pattern #1:
Tiny Hearts Sweater
Fits 12-14" Baby dolls.Materials: One two-ounce skein sport weight yarn in white and one skein
red, knitting needles No. 4 and No. 5. Front: Beg at lower edge with red and No. 4 needles, cast on 36 sts. Break off red, attach white and work in k1,p1 ribbing for 6 rows. Change to No. 5 needles,
beg with a knit row, work in St st for 2 rows. Attach red and commence pattern as follows: Row 1: *With white k3, with red, k1, rep from * across.
Row 2: With white, purl across.
Row 3: With white, knit across.
Row 4: With white, p2, *with red p1, with white p3, repeat from * across.
Row 5: With white, knit across.
Row 5: With white, purl across.
Repeat Rows 1-6 for pattern until total length is 2 inches.
Armhole shaping: Keeping in pat as established, bind off 3 sts beg next two rows.
Work even in pat until armhole measures 1-1/2 inches from bound off sts.
Neck Shaping: Work in pat for 11 sts, bind off center 8 sts, pat for 11 sts. Work each side separately as follows: Dec 1 st at neck
edge every other row 3 times. Work even until armhole measures 2-3/4 inches. Bind off 4 sts at armhole edge 2 times for shoulder shaping. Back: Work as for front until armhole measures 2 inches from
bound off sts. Then work neck shaping and shoulder shaping same as for front. Sleeves: Beg at lower edge with red and No. 4 needles, cast on 32 ssts. Break off red, attach white and work in k1,p1 ribbing for 6
rows. Change to No. 5 needles and inc 4 sts evenly spaced. Purl one row. Attach red and work in pattern st as given for rows 1-6 until total length is 3 inches. Bind off loosely.
Finishing: Sew one shoulder seam. With right side of work facing, with white, and using No. 4 needles, pick up and knit 60 sts around neck edge. Work in k1,p1 ribbing for 3 rows. Drop white, attach red
and bind off loosely in ribbing. Sew rem shoulder seam. Sew sleeves into armholes. Sew side and sleeve seams.

Pattern #2
Knit a Heart . . .
Or knit two, decorate them, sew them together and make sachets......or leave open at top, attach chain stitch handles for a little purse for child or
doll. Materials: Red knitting worsted weight yarn, knitting needles No. 8, assorted sequins, beads, buttons, appliques to decorate.
Cast on 1 st. (Work in garter st throughout).
Row 1: Knit, increasing one st.
Row 2: Knit.
Row 3: Knit, increasing one st in each st (4 sts).
Row 4: Knit.
Row 5: Knit, inc 1 st in first stitch, k1, inc 1 st in next 2 sts.
Row 6: Knit.
Continuing in garter st, inc 1 st both sides every other row until there are 19 sts. Knit 9 rows even. Next
Row: K2tog, k7, bind off one st, k to within last 2 sts, k2tog. Work each side separately as follows: K2tog both sides every other row until 2 sts rem. Bind off. Weave in yarn ends.
Decorate.
