This weeks free craft pattern:
The Complete Guide To Glues & Adhesives: Ornament

Simple Silver Link

This little link can be an accent to a pendant, a link in a chain, or a pair of earrings. It is a good project to practice basic wire skills.

  • 12" 18 gauge sterling wire for each link
  • 6" 16 gauge sterling wire for eye pin (3" used, 6" to aid grasp)
  • Round nose pliers
  • Chain nose pliers
  • Flush cutters

  1. Snip the 12" 18 gauge wire so that both ends are flush cut. Bend it in half over the 6" 16 gauge wire, which will serve as a mandrel, the core of the link, and the eye pin. Wrap until you can measure 4" from the end.

  2. Turn the piece around to work on the opposite end. Unwrap a coil at midpoint and begin to wrap again (this makes the wrap more uniform). Wrap until you can measure 4" at the end. Using the round nose pliers, make a spiral turning inward toward the wrap.

  3. Measure the placement on the nose of the pliers and begin the opposite spiral in the same place on the pliers. This way, the two spirals will match in size of the inner circle.
  4. Snip the ends of the core wire in a flush cut. Make an eye pin on both ends of the wrap. You will have wire left over, but you can use it for another link. (I prefer to begin with a longer piece and keep cutting it as each link is made.)

  5. Twist the spirals away from the wrap and then angle alongside the wrap using the chain nose pliers.

  6. Add dangling parts with jump rings.

This pattern is just one of the many you will find in Krause's Wire In Design - Modern Wire Art & Mixed Media.
